About Us

The Mambo Legends Orchestra unites the maestros who spent their careers performing with the Tito Puente Orchestra. Formed by Jose Madera, Mitch Frohman, and the late John ‘Dandy’ Rodriguez, the Mambo Legends Orchestra is committed to delivering the vibrant music that defines Latin Jazz and Salsa to audiences worldwide. Under the musical direction of renowned arranger and musician Jose Madera, this band keeps the iconic sounds of the 1950s and 60s Palladium era alive, while pushing the music forward with contemporary sounds.

This 21-piece orchestra, packed with maestros, boasts unparalleled experience, which is unmistakable when you hear them perform. They have successfully preserved the legacy of the Big 3 (Machito, Tito Rodriguez, and Tito Puente), while incorporating new musical concepts to keep the genre evolving. Following their Grammy-nominated 2010 release *Watch Out! ¡Ten Cuidao!*, the orchestra is preparing for the release of their second album, with the single *Sabroso Guaguancó* set to debut in October 2024.

The Mambo Legends passion for sharing this music with new generations was showcased in the 2013 documentary *For the Love of the Mambo*, which chronicled their work with students at the State University of New York's Crane School of Music. A newly released documentary on the orchestra, produced by Mari Keiko-Gonzalez and Hey Ma Productions, will air as part of the 2024 *Voces* lineup nationwide on PBS throughout October. This film follows the MLO members as they trace the significance of Afro-Cuban Jazz and their journey to bring it into the 21st century.

As the Mambo Legends Orchestra looks toward the future, performances, educational clinics, and workshops play a vital role in their mission to keep this rich musical tradition alive. By passing down the knowledge and culture that has shaped this music, the MLO ensures its legacy will endure for generations to come.
